Welcome to The Farlan.

Originally from the Netherlands, my journey has taken me across Europe before eventually leading me to North Shields—a place that quickly became home. After renovating old farmhouses in France, travelling through Spain in a campervan, and searching for somewhere to settle down, my husband Peter, our dog Ruby, and I found exactly what we were looking for here on the North East coast.

What began as a new chapter soon evolved into a passion.

I fell in love with the rich history of North Shields, its bustling Fish Quay, the friendly locals, the vibrant creativity, and the strong sense of community. I was eager to learn more, connect with local people, and share the stories that often go unnoticed.

That passion led me to create I Love North Shields—an independent community platform dedicated to celebrating the people, places, heritage, and culture that make this town so special. Today, this platform brings together local stories, stunning photography, events, and creative projects that shine a spotlight on what it truly means to be exploring North East.

Why The Farlan?

Inside the apartment, you'll find local history books, carefully curated recommendations, and my favourite places to eat, explore, and unwind. Think of it as staying with a local friend who has already crafted the perfect itinerary filled with insider local guides.

The name The Farlan is inspired by the historic herring industry that once shaped communities around Britain's east coast. A farlan was the long wooden trough where herring lasses skilfully sorted and prepared the day's catch—a small piece of fishing heritage that connects this apartment to the working history of North Shields and the North Sea. That sense of heritage, craftsmanship, and honest hospitality is at the heart of everything we hope you'll experience during your stay.
